1. Check for Old, Missing, and Damaged Shingles
Damaged or missing shingles can cause water to seep into the roof. In case you are using wooden shingles, ensure you are inspecting them for any signs of dry rot. When using asphalt shingles, ensure you are checking for signs of wear during your regular roof cleaning. Asphalt usually contains granules that resemble gravel. When shingles age, the pellets can begin to break free.
2. Look for Curled or Buckled Shingles
Hot air present in the attic may end up causing shingles to curl, buckle, or warp. Misshapen shingles may end up compromising the integrity of the roof, thus allowing water to get in and resulting in a reduced rate of ventilation. You can also consider replacing the curling asphalt shingles. When the curling shingles are more than one piece, the best idea is to re-shingle the whole roof.
3. Look for Piles of Leaves, Moss, and Algae
Algae, moss, and piles of leaves may end up destroying the roof. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure you are often looking at the top of the roof. By getting into the habit of doing this, you will ensure that you are maintaining the roof, and it will end up serving you for a long time. When you do find leaves piled up on the roof, you should ensure you remove them carefully so that the roof isn’t damaged in any way. If you have trees near your roof, they should be kept trimmed to prevent them from dropping leaves on the rooftops.
4. Inspect the Roof Up Close
If possible, it is best to inspect the roof by using a ladder. While up on the roof, ensure you are looking for any damage present in vent pipes, dormers, or the chimney. Corroded or damaged flashings can let water into the roof’s internal structure.
You need to ensure you are inspecting the roof often. When you do that, you will end up protecting it from higher leakages, which will force you to repair the whole roof.
